Committee on Graduate and Postdoctoral Education
The Committee on Graduate and Postdoctoral Education provides leadership and direction in doctoral and postdoctoral education and aims to increase the number of students who enter and succeed in graduate and postdoctoral programs. Its activities include sponsoring and/or supporting the ASM/CDC Program in Infectious Disease and Public Health Microbiology, ASM Kadner Institute for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scientists in Preparation for Careers in Microbiology, and ASM Scientific Writing and Publishing Institute. It also maintains the ASM Graduate and Postdoctoral Opportunities Website. Cynthia Nau Cornelissen, Ph.D., of Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, Virginia) chairs the committee.
Mission
The mission of the Committee on Graduate and Postdoctoral Education is to:
- Promote excellence in research and teaching in graduate and postdoctoral microbiology education
- Ensure a broader inclusion of racial and gender diversity in graduate and postdoctoral education
- Enhance access to diverse career opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral scientists
The strategic goals and objectives of the Committee are to:
Goal 1: Develop and disseminate information about graduate and postdoctoral education
Objective 1.1: Identify resources for the ASMGAP website
Objective 1.2: Conduct Kadner Institute in Preparation for Careers in Microbiology
Objective 1.3: Sponsor EB sessions during the General Meeting
Objective 1.4: Recognize and showcase excellence in graduate teaching and research
Objective 1.5: Develop and conduct Institute in Scientific Publishing
Objective 1.6: Disseminate career information to graduate students and postdoctoral scientists
Objective 1.7: Develop and disseminate best practices in graduate and postdoctoral education in career development
Goal 2: Promote professional development and leadership in graduate and postdoctoral microbiology education
Objective 2.1: Identify and disseminate information about teaching postdoctoral programs
Objective 2.2: Develop a pilot for an ASM Teaching Postdoctoral Fellowship
Objective 2.3: Increase participation of postdoctoral fellows in ASMCUE
Objective 2.4: Advocate for effective mentoring experiences for graduate and postdoctoral microbiology training
Objective 2.5: Conduct Kadner Institute in Preparation for Careers in Microbiology
Objective 2.6: Develop and conduct Institute in Scientific Publishing
Goal 3: Increase participation of individuals from underrepresented groups to ensure a globally competitive domestic workforce in microbiology
Objective 3.1: Promote existing programs to serve underrepresented groups
Objective 3.2: Ensure diversity in all GAP programs
Goal 4: Collaborate and form partnerships with organizations and ASM Committees focusing on graduate and postdoctoral education
Objective 4.1: Support membership to the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) and presentations at the NPA annual meeting
Objective 4.2: Share information with and sponsor a session at the Compact for Faculty Diversity Conference
Objective 4.3: Solicit the help of the ASM Membership and Communications Committees to get content for ASMGAP website
