Professional Certification

The American College of Microbiology (College), a governance unit within the Professional Practice Committee and the ASM, has as its mission promoting the high quality and ethical practice of the microbiology and immunology professions for the benefit of human, animal, and environmental well-being. The College administers highly stringent certification examinations for clinical and industrial microbioloigsts and immunologists and accredits postdoctoral training programs in clinical microbiology and immunology.

American Board of Medical Microbiology (ABMM) certifies the expertise of doctoral-level microbiologists seeking to direct public health or clinical microbiology laboratories.

American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology (ABMLI) certifies the expertise of doctoral-level immunologists seeking to direct laboratories engaged in the practice of medical laboratory immunology.

National Registry of Certified Microbiologists (NRCM) certifies professional microbiologists at the prebaccalaureate/baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels in biological safety; food and dairy; and pharmaceutical/medical device/cosmetics.
