  • Nobember 6, 1997 - Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems
    The ASM sent a letter to the House and Senate Agriculture Committees, the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee urging support for the Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems contained in the Research, Extension and Education Reauthorization Bill (S. 1150). The Initiative creates a new mandatory spending account in the U.S. Department of Agriculture that would provide $780 million over five years for agricultural research funding.
  • October 28, 1997 - CLIA Fee Increase
    The ASM submitted comments on the Federal Register Notice announcing a revised CLIA Fee Schedule. ASM encouraged HCFA to amend its proposal to significantly raise CLIA certification fees for clinical laboratories.
  • September 17, 1997 - Food Safety Initiative
    The ASM sent a letter to House and Senate Conferees to the FY 1998 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill urging them to fund the President's Food Safety Initiative at the President's requested levels. Prior to the conference committee, the initiative was only partially funded.
  • September 4, 1997 - EPA Fiscal Year 1998 Appropriations
    The ASM sent a letter to members of the House and Senate appropriations Subcommittees on Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agencies regarding the House/Senate conference committee for their FY 1998 appropriations measure. The ASM is concerned about the proposed funding levels for the Environmental Protection Agency's Graduate Fellowship Program and Safe Drinking Water research programs.
  • September 2, 1997 - International Programs to Control of Infectious Diseases
    The ASM sent a letter to members of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Foreign Operations. The ASM strongly endorses the Child Survival and Diseases Programs Fund and urges Congress to: 1) support the House level for the Communicable Disease Initiative which would provide at least $50 million in additional funds to strengthen global surveillance and control of infectious diseases; 2) explicitly include the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the group of agencies that the Agency for International Development (USAID) should consult with prior to obligating the additional funds.
  • July 25, 1997 - Tuberculosis Guidelines
    The ASM submitted comments to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in response to the guidelines "Working Safely with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis in Clinical, Public Health, and Research Laboratories, Notice" published in the Federal Register on April 28, 1997.
  • July 10, 1997 - Tax Exempt Status for Tuition Waivers
    The ASM sent a letter to the Senate Finance Committee, the House Ways and Means Committee and other key congressional leaders urging them to continue tax exempt status for tuition waivers for graduate teaching and research assistants.
  • June 16, 1997 - EPA Plant Pesticide Regulations
    The ASM provided the EPA with comments on three proposed rules regulating plant pesticides, nucleic acids, and viral coat proteins as they appeared in volume 62 of the Federal Register, pages 27132-27155.
  • May 18, 1997 - Government Printing Office Proposal
    The ASM sent a letter to the Senate Joint Committee on Printing, urging that legislation to reform title 44 of the U.S. Code, relating to the Government Printing Office (GPO) be revised. The ASM is concerned that the proposed legislation would have the unintended consequence of prohibiting scientists who are federal employees from submitting their research findings for publication in scientific journals.
