Sponsored Events
ASM's Committee on K-12 Education sponsors workshops at national and regional science teacher conferences such as National Association for Biology Teachers and the National Science Teachers Association.
UPCOMING MEETING: 2013 National Science Teachers Association Conference
April 11 – 14, 2013
San Antonio, TX
ASM Sponsored Session: Sunday, April 14 8:00–9:00 AM
Presenter(s): Duane Pierson, NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX
The 2013 ASM Sponsored session titled “American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and NASA: Microbes and Spaceflight” aims to stimulate interest in microbes. Session attendees will learn how NASA scientists study the impact of microbes on spaceflight, what they have learned, and how to protect astronauts.
2012 National Association of Biology Teachers Conference
October 31 – November 3, 2012
Dallas, TX

The 2012 ASM Symposium titled “Microbes: Evolution and Life at the Extremes” highlighted various projects for studying the diversity of microorganisms and featured three outstanding speakers who presented current research demonstrating how knowledge of bacterial evolution influences our understanding of life in unusual and extreme environments. Dr. Duane Pierson from the Johnson Space Center, NASA, presented research on organisms associated with space flight. Dr. George Fox, a pioneer in the study of bacterial ribosomes, presented research on the history of the ribosome and the insight that can be derived about the origins of life in “Origins of the Cellular Protein Synthesis Machinery.” Dr. Mark Schneegurt concluded the symposium with highlights of the Salt Plains Microbial Observatory and the diversity of organisms found in this extreme environment in “Extremely Salty Microbes on Mars and in the Classroom.” All presentations were held Thursday, November 1, 2012.
During the conference, ASM staff and committee members exhibited ASM resources for K-12 faculty and disseminated information about ASM and its programs. ASM staff and committee members also attended a variety of sessions and workshops to learn what kind of activities and methods are being utilized in the classroom, and what kind of resources and opportunities ASM could provide to enhance them.
